iPhone 17 Pro Max vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: what changed in a year

From the outside, these are very similar phones. Inside, Apple changed the camera, cooling, battery and the logic of the Pro line itself. Here is where the upgrade is real — and where it is mostly a new number in the name.

In 2025, iPhone 17 Pro Max substantially reworked the Pro line: an aluminum body, vapor chamber, A19 Pro and three 48-megapixel cameras. A year later, iPhone 18 Pro Max looks familiar, but adds A20 Pro, a new cooling system, a variable-aperture main camera and longer battery life.

This is a rare comparison where appearance is not the interesting part. Apple barely changed the formula of the large Pro Max, but methodically improved the things that define how it behaves in real work: heat, sustained performance, camera, charging and endurance.

Less changed outside than inside

iPhone 17 Pro Max had already moved to an aluminum unibody with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. With iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple keeps the same basic construction. The display size also remains unchanged at 6.9 inches.

The main visual change on the front is an updated Dynamic Island. In the new generation it takes up less space and can show several Live Activities at once. It is a neat refinement, but not the reason the two phones will feel like devices from different eras.

A19 Pro vs A20 Pro

iPhone 17 Pro Max runs on A19 Pro with a six-core CPU, six-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. iPhone 18 Pro Max uses A20 Pro: the six-core CPU remains, the GPU grows to seven cores, and the neural block becomes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple also moved A20 Pro to a 2-nanometer process and claims 50% more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro. According to the company, the graphics block can be up to 40% faster than the previous generation.

For a Pro Max, however, the more interesting question is not the peak number but how long the phone can sustain performance. In the 17 series Apple made a vapor chamber a central part of the thermal architecture for the first time. In the 18 series it was redesigned: the system’s area is roughly three times larger, while chip and memory placement was changed to move heat away more effectively.

This is where the upgrade may show itself most clearly in games, video editing, long recording sessions and other heavy workloads. In messaging or a browser, the difference between the two chips will probably remain far less noticeable.

Camera: the main change is not zoom

iPhone 17 Pro Max already has three 48-megapixel modules: main, ultra-wide and telephoto. The telephoto uses a 100 mm focal length for 4x and delivers 8x optical-quality magnification at 200 mm.

On iPhone 18 Pro Max, the telephoto arrangement is broadly unchanged. The new phone therefore does not become a device with fundamentally different zoom reach. The major change is in the main 48-megapixel camera.

It gains a physically variable aperture with four positions: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. A wider aperture gathers more light, while a narrower one increases depth of field. That is especially useful in group photos where people at different distances from the camera need to remain sharp.

Apple also added Pro controls with manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance settings, plus a histogram. So the main camera upgrade is not another zoom number, but more physical and manual control over the image.

Battery is a stronger argument now

For the eSIM-only iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple rated up to 39 hours of video playback. For iPhone 18 Pro Max, the stated figure reaches 45 hours. Absolute numbers may depend on the regional version, but the direction is clear: the new Pro Max has a noticeably larger endurance reserve.

Wired charging is faster too. iPhone 17 Pro Max can reach 50% in about 20 minutes with a suitable adapter. For iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple quotes around 15 minutes to the same 50% with a compatible 60 W or higher adapter.

Five minutes sounds modest until you need to top up quickly before leaving. In everyday use, improvements like this are often more noticeable than a gain in synthetic processor benchmarks.

Apple Intelligence and the new Siri

Both generations support Apple Intelligence, but iPhone 18 Pro Max launches with iOS 27 and Siri AI. Apple describes the new Siri as a more conversational system that can use personal context and on-screen content.

Availability depends on language and region, however. At launch, Siri AI is in beta primarily in English, with other languages expanding gradually. In the European Union, some Siri AI capabilities on iOS are not available at launch. So this point will not matter equally to every buyer.

The price went up too

iPhone 17 Pro Max started at $1,199 in the United States for 256 GB. iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both generations are offered in 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB versions.

The extra hundred dollars changes the context of the whole comparison. The new phone has to justify itself not merely by being newer, but by whether its specific improvements matter to an owner of the previous generation.

Does upgrading from 17 Pro Max make sense?

For ordinary everyday use, the gap between generations remains small. The display is the same size, the camera system is broadly familiar, and A19 Pro is far from a weak processor. Social networks, browsing, messaging and casual photography are unlikely to make the new phone feel completely different.

But iPhone 18 Pro Max has several changes that add up to a coherent package for more demanding use: a new main camera, more serious cooling, extra sustained performance, longer battery life and faster charging.

What changed in one year

iPhone 17 Pro Max was a major structural redesign. iPhone 18 Pro Max feels more like bringing that structure to a more finished state.

It is a good example of how modern flagships evolve. Once the display, body and basic camera have already reached a high level, progress moves inward: cooling, efficiency, computational photography and resource management.

That is why two phones can look almost identical and still behave differently in exactly the situations where the most is expected from a Pro Max.
